Shimon Attie

 Photographe – vit et travaille à New York.                                                                                              Shimon Attie a acquis une réputation internationale grâce à ses photographies, installations vidéo et interventions dans l’espace public. Pour la série The Writing on the Wall 1991-3,  il projeta des photographies historiques d’habitants de l’ancien quartier juif sur les murs des immeubles encore existants dans le Scheunenviertel de Berlin.

 Pour la série Between Dreams and History réalisée dans le Lower East Side de New York en 1998, (production Creative Time) Attie demanda à des habitants de ce quartier d’écrire des souvenirs de leur jeunesse, qu’il réunit en un texte poétique. Celui-ci fut ensuite projeté au laser, comme écrit par une main invisible, sur les murs du quartier pour évoquer les expériences et souvenirs de ses anciens habitants.

Lauréat du Prix de Rome 2001, Shimon Attie a créé dans cette ville la série The History of Another (photographies de projections d’images)  qui, à l’occasion de sa présentation au Chicago Museum of Contemporary Photography en juin 2004, a également donné lieu à édition d’une importante monographie éponyme (Twin Palms Publishing).

- The Attraction of Onlookers oeuvre vidéo-photo,  évoque le traumatisme subi par le village minier de Aberfan lorsque des masses de résidus de charbon se sont détachées du terril situé au-dessus du village, recouvrant sa seule école primaire et de nombreuses maisons d’habitation, tuant plus de 130 personnes, dont toute une génération d’enfants.
L’objectif de Shimon Attie a été de redonner à ce village et à ses habitants, si longtemps réduit à ce seul événement survenu voici 40 ans, une vie et des caractéristiques propres. Pour ce faire il a fait poser des villageois dans un espace anonyme, noir, un vide en quelque sorte, pour que l’imagination du spectateur puisse remplir le reste : ce pourrait être n’importe quel village, un village, chaque village, mon village. Attie les a placés sur une estrade ronde tournante, dans une pose figée, évoquant des figurines sur une boîte à musique.
L’oeuvre est composée d’une vidéo de 17′, sur cinq panneaux de 2,50m x 2m et d’une série de photographies
